Impacts of the Credit Crunch in the Far East

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Latest news:

“Following the problems in the sub-prime lending market in America, Northern Rock, Bradford & Bingley etc in the UK, uncertainty has now hit Japan. In the last 7 days Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches.

Yesterday it was announced that Karaoke Bank was up for sale and is likely go for a song, while today shares in Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived. While Samurai Bank is soldiering on following sharp cutbacks, Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black. Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank where it is feared staff may get a raw deal”

Q: What did the burglars take from the office?

In reality they’ve taken much much more than that. How is a penniless It startup supposed to do business without any equipment? We will struggle on but if theres no good news in the next few weeks I’m having words with somebody.

If Gordon Brown hadn’t caused this credit crisis maybes the burglar wouldn’t have needed to help himself.

The future of English football – safe in Arsene’s hands

Six English players, one Welsh. Walcott rested

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell
“We knew they were a good set of lads at Arsenal, but nobody knew how good they were.

“They were awesome at times and would have beaten most teams. A lot of people would like to know how Arsene Wenger can do it.

“He has gone around the world to pick out the best – but there are also four or five top-class English kids in there so that can only bode well for the future of the national team.”

Where’s our $75k?

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

According to technorati state of the blogosphere:

The majority of bloggers we surveyed currently have advertising on their blogs. Among those with advertising, the mean annual investment in their blog is $1,800, but it’s paying off. The mean annual revenue is $6,000 with $75K+ in revenue for those with 100,000 or more unique visitors per month.

So how come Peeque is not providing its authors with enough money to get gently pissed once a month, and heavily inebriated once a quarter? From this authors perspective I would suggest:

  • Lack of topic consistency
  • Not enough time to build an audience
  • Infrequent posting by some authors
  • no advertising on the site

So how do we turn our ramblings into beer tokens?

  • more controversy e.g. linkbait?
  • more focus on the most important subject: money?
  • more postings?

Obviously I don’t know the answer so am looking to find it in the comments. However I would suggest that if we are doing this, we “try our utmost” and “always want more, always give more”

Broader issues facing the US economy

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Dr. Marc Faber concluded his monthly bulletin (June 2008) with the following:

”The federal government is sending each of us a $600 rebate. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money goes to China. If we spend it on gasoline it goes to the Arabs. If we buy a computer it will go to India. If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. If we purchase a good car it will go to Germany. If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy. The only way to keep that money here at home is to spend it on prostitutes and beer, since these are the only products still produced in US. I’ve been doing my part.”

What a week for the City ….

Lehman’s, Merrill Lynch, AIG, HBOS

I’m stunned. I don’t understand it, and I don’t quite now what to make of it.  Still though, Gordon’s onto it like a shot.

LONDON (Reuters) – Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Thursday there was a need to look at “irresponsible behaviour” in financial markets following the global crisis that has seen banks collapse.

“I think we’ve got to look at where there has been irresponsible behaviour and I’ve said for some time that we need reforms in the system,” he said in remarks carried on TV networks.

“I believe there is now an audience that agrees with me that we should do more. We’ve got to clean up the financial system. We don’t want these problems recurring in the future.”

Another Call Centre Story

Friday, September 19th, 2008

All the turmoil this week and no related posts on Peeque?

Anyway, never mind. I love a good call centre story, so here’s one I received earlier today. I have no idea if it’s true, so I’ve removed any reference to the name of the company involved or the location of the call centre.

A lady died this past January, and the bank in question billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00 when she died, but now somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to the bank. Here is the exchange.

Family Member : I am calling to tell you she died back in January.
Bank Employee : The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.
Family Member : Maybe, you should turn it over to collections.
Bank Employee : Since it is two months past due, it already has been.
Family Member : So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?
Bank Employee : Either report her account to frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!
Family Member : Do you think God will be mad at her?
Bank Employee : Excuse me?
Family Member : Did you just get what I was telling you – the part about her being dead?
Bank Employee : Sir, you’ll have to speak to my supervisor.

(Supervisor gets on the phone)

Family Member : I’m calling to tell you, she died back in January with a $0 balance.
Bank Employee : The account was never closed and late fees and charges still apply.
Family Member : You mean you want to collect from her estate?
Bank Employee : (Stammer) Are you her lawyer?
Family Member : No, I’m her great nephew. (Lawyer info was given)
Bank Employee : Could you fax us a certificate of death?
Family Member : Sure. (Fax number was given )

(After they get the fax)

Bank Employee : Our system just isn’t setup for death. I don’t know what more I can do to help.
Family Member : Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her. She won’t care.
Bank Employee : Well, the late fees and charges do still apply. (What is wrong with these people?!?)
Family Member : Would you like her new billing address?
Bank Employee : That might help…
Family Member : Odessa Memorial Cemetery , Highway 129, Plot Number 69.
Bank Employee : Sir, that’s a cemetery!
Family Member : And what do you do with dead people on your planet???

Richard Wright

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I was very sad to hear this evening that Richard Wright has passed away after a battle with cancer.

Richard Wright, 1943 -2008

Richard Wright, 1943 -2008

Mr Wright is by no means the first of my “heroes” to leave this world behind, but somehow this seems sadder than most. When Syd died in 2006 it didn’t seem a shock, as in many ways the Syd that made the early Pink Floyd records had long since left us. With Richard, however, it feels almost that he has left before his time.
